Porscheshop Manx Tour 2008

Porscheshop Manx Tour 2008 (May 16th-19th)

We are pleased to announce our Manx event for this year.

This is the 9th in a very successful series and both the event and the cost are similar to previous years.

Limitless driving pleasure
One of the joys of the Isle of Man is the fact that there is no overall speed limit. Another is that a large part of the road structure is a race circuit. With a lap distance of 37.73 miles the Isle of Man TT circuit is the daddy of them all. OK some of it goes through towns and villages where there are speed limits that are rigorously enforced but, in my opinion, that only enhances the rest of the lap where you can use your Porsche for its intended purpose.

The Manx attitude to speed if completely different to elsewhere in the British Isles. The responsible use of speed is encouraged and some of the greatest enthusiasts are the Manx Police.

The Porscheshop has a fine record of safety on the Island and there has only been 1 minor incident and that was no fault of the Porsche driver.

What do you get and what does it cost?
We depart, by Seacat, from Liverpool (or larger vessel Heysham if more convenient) on the morning of Friday 18th May and arrive in Douglas. It is then an 8 mile drive to the Mount Murray Hotel. You will be staying at the hotel, which is probably the best one on the Island, for 3 nights.

Friday evening. Reception with wine and buffet. This is a Manx buffet and this means that you will not require another evening meal. You will get to meet your fellow Island Hoppers and, no doubt, listen to adventures from previous visit.

Saturday. After a leisurely breakfast meet up at the Grandstand for the ‘T.T. Challenge’, a rally held on the historic TT circuit. This is part of PCGB Motor Sports Divisions ‘Rally Initiative’. This is a regularity run over the 37.73 miles of the famous circuit. There are two challenges.. The first is to cover the course finding and stopping at the check points that we have placed around the circuit. If you achieve that you will be awarded a memento in the shape of a plaque to enable you to show off your skills. The second is more demanding. You will be assigned a target time. There will be trophies for the cars completing the route closest to their target time. Speed, as such, will not be determining factor in this event.

The rest of the day is free to explore the Island. There will be advice, recommendation and directions if you need them. A word of advice here, don’t party too hard as tomorrow starts early.

Sunday. The famous ‘Dawn Raid’ This is the highlight of the weekend. We leave the car park at 6:30am and proceed to the TT grandstand where we meet up with our travelling marshals who are members of PCGB Region 30 and very experienced with the TT circuit. We then do a quick lap at road legal speeds. This means as fast as you like outside the restricted sections. There are 2 absolute rules:

  1. You do not overtake the lead marshal (even if you could) because he is there to control the event.
  2. You pull in toward the end of the lap where indicated. There is a good reason for this and it is a requirement for the event.

After the Dawn Raid we return to the Mount Murray Hotel for a hearty breakfast and an opportunity to exaggerate our morning’s experiences.

In the evening we hold our Gala Dinner. Come hungry because Manx food is notable for the quantity as well as the quality. As for dress code, ‘Dress to Impress’.

Monday. Depart from Douglas. There are choices of sailing and if choose an afternoon departure time you will have time to explore further, to put in another lap or maybe a round of golf at the Mount Murray’s superb golf course.

The costs
For everything listed including ferry, hotel accommodation, Gala dinner, route maps, Rally plate and badges the cost is £295 per person assuming 2 people share a car and hotel room.

Insurance
It is strongly recommend some form of holiday insurance be taken out personally.

Please understand that hotels in the Isle of Man are in use all the year round and to some extent it shows.
